A weekend of shows in NYC
A trip with a focus, three broadway shows in two day: “Oh! Mary”, Death Becomes Her, and Sunset Blvd.
Death Becomes Her
What a fun show! Campy and gay, this show had everything. I have watched the movie countless times and I was not disappointed with this musical. It was full of laughs, some fun physical comedy and all the aspects of the movie that makes it so much fun with some great special effects.
- Michelle Williams: The 3rd child of Destiny
- Megan Hilty: From SMASH. This girl can sing. The Meryl character.
- Christopher Sieber: He is familiar from various random TV shows. He played Bruce Willis’ character perfectly.
- Jennifer Simard: The Goldie character. She was a pleasure to watch.
“Oh! Mary”
Wow wow wow. We were in the second row for this one, and it was so F’n funny. Cole Escola wrote and plays Mary Todd Lincoln, Lincoln’s bored, alcoholic wife who loves Cabaret. This show was hilarious from start to finish. Apparently, Cole is wrapping up on Broadway, and he is being replaced by a female actress… that should be illegal. He was so good; the writing was hilarious. If you have a chance to see this before he leaves… do not delay!
Sunset Blvd.
So I first heard of this play after first hearing Rosie O’Donnell on TikTok gushing about Nicole Scherzinger, the musical and her performance. I mentioned to Brad that we needed to get tickets before it became “the hot ticket”. This was not the Sunset Blvd that I vaguely remember from Vancouver in the 90’s I went to. This is completely re-imagined, modern and minimalistic but yet very effective.
I have to agree with Rosie, Nicole was insane… Her singing was not what I expected from a Pussycat Doll and it gave me chills. This musical held to the main storey but in such a creative and imaginative way. And oh. my. god. Did I mention her singing? The entire cast was really good IMHO. Also for a 5’5” person, her feet looked really big… she was in bare feet the entire show.
