Chongqing Tips
22 – 26 Nov 2026 · Chongqing, China
These tips were collected from sources online and are here for reference only. I can't vouch for them, so check anything important before you rely on it. For the things I do vouch for, check my thumbs page.
Planning Your Days
-
The big picture: the best thing in Chongqing isn't an attraction, it's the topography. The city is stacked vertically and the fun is walking through it, not ticking off a list. What's worth it is mostly free, and what you can skip is mostly the paid photo spots.
Chongqing's best-known nickname is the Mountain City (山城). More than 90% of the municipality is mountainous.

For four nights: one night for Jiefangbei and the Hongyadong photo, one full day walking the layered streets, one day trip (Dazu or Wulong), and one slow day with hotpot as the main event.
Jiefangbei (解放碑) is the 1940s victory monument at the heart of the Yuzhong business district. Metro: Jiaochangkou (Line 1) or Linjiangmen (Line 2). Wulong (武隆) is a UNESCO-listed karst area with the Three Natural Bridges (天生三桥) and Furong Cave. Take the train from Chongqing East to Wulong South (not the old Wulong station), about 40 to 50 minutes, then shuttle buses to the sights.

Late November works in your favour: fog, fewer crowds, and the city looks better in fog anyway. Bring a real jacket, as it's a damp cold, not a dry one.
November averages are a high of about 17°C and a low of about 12.5°C. Chongqing is also nicknamed Fog City (雾都), with over 100 foggy days a year.
Worth Your Time

Walking between levels: Kuixinglou, Shibati, and the random escalators and public elevators that connect streets 10 floors apart. This is the thing people come back talking about, and it costs nothing.
At Kuixinglou (魁星楼) you walk in at street level by the river, take the lift to the 22nd floor and step out onto another street. It's free and open 24 hours. Metro: Linjiangmen (Line 2).
-
Shibati is enough. Skip Shancheng Alley, as it isn't worth it.

Shibati (十八梯) is a stairway neighbourhood in Yuzhong, rebuilt in the old style and reopened in 2021, about 500 m from Jiefangbei. Metro: Jiaochangkou (Lines 1 and 2), which has a Shibati exit. Shancheng Alley (山城巷) is the old stepped lane right next to it.
-
The metro itself, especially Line 2 along the river. You ride through the city rather than past it.
Line 2 is a monorail, the first in China. From Jiaochangkou it runs underground, then comes out along the Jialing River and passes through Liziba, the station inside an apartment building.
- Night views: any bridge or high vantage point. You don't need a ticketed observation deck for this.
-
Hotpot, not as a meal but as an event. Go with someone who knows, order the beef tripe and the potato slices, and accept that "wei la" (slightly spicy) is a local joke at your expense.
To order: tripe 毛肚 (maodu); mild 微辣, medium 中辣 or very spicy 特辣; or a split pot 鸳鸯锅 with one spicy side and one clear. The usual dip is sesame oil with garlic (油碟).
-
Dazu Rock Carvings, if you have a full day. It's two hours out, and genuinely world-class rather than Instagram-class.
大足石刻, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The main site is Baodingshan (宝顶山). Take the high-speed train from Chongqing North to Dazu South, then about 50 to 60 minutes by taxi, or the 8:00 tourist coach from Jiefangbei (one return, at 16:00). In November Baodingshan is ¥115 and open 9:00 to 18:00, last entry 16:30. Bring your passport, as tickets are in your name.

Where the cable car lands (south bank): the ride isn't worth it, but the spot it lands is next to a road with some very nice, small hole-in-the-wall bars. It leads up to a road with more local street restaurants, and there's a local market down a backroad. You don't need the cable car to get there, just take a taxi to Longmen Rd.
The cableway's south station is at 4 Shangxin Street (上新街4号) in the Longmenhao area of Nan'an, right by Longmenhao Old Street (龙门浩老街). Metro: Shangxinjie (Line 6), Exit 2.
-
Erchang Culture and Creative Park: an old industrial area turned into cafes, art shops and creative spaces. It rarely gets mentioned, which is odd, because the area is awesome.
二厂文创公园, at 1 Eling Zheng Street (鹅岭正街1号) in Yuzhong. The buildings date from 1937 and were the Chongqing No. 2 Printing Factory from 1953. Eling Park is next door, and Liziba station (Line 2) is about a 1 km walk downhill.
Overhyped
-
Hongyadong: the photo from across the bridge is the entire experience. Inside it's crowded restaurants. Go at night, take the photo in 10 minutes, and don't plan a meal there.
洪崖洞. The classic photo is from Qiansimen Bridge (千厮门嘉陵江大桥) or the far bank. In winter the lights come on around 18:00 to 18:30 and go off around 22:30. Metro: Xiaoshizi (Lines 1 and 6). Entry is free, but weekends need a free booking in advance.
-
Ciqikou: a souvenir street. If you've seen one Chinese old town, you've seen this one. If you've never been to one, though, Ciqikou or Shibati is worth it for the spectacle. Read up on what it is first so you go with open eyes.

磁器口, in Shapingba, about 35 to 40 minutes from Jiefangbei on Line 1. The name means "porcelain port". It was a river trading town on the Jialing from the Song dynasty and peaked in the late Qing. The main street is now heavily commercial, and the side lanes are quieter.
-
Liziba station: the train through the apartment building is a two-minute photo stop that people spend 40 minutes getting to. Skipping the photo is the right call.
If you ride Line 2 along the river, you pass through it anyway.
-
Yangtze River Cableway: a five-minute ride with a long queue. Only worth it if you go at opening.

长江索道. Opens at 8:00, until 22:00 through November and 21:00 from December. ¥30 one way, ¥50 return. Bookings open on its WeChat account up to two days ahead.
