Guangzhou Tips

13 – 17 Nov 2026 · Guangdong, China

These tips were collected from sources online and are here for reference only. I can't vouch for them, so check anything important before you rely on it. For the things I do vouch for, check my thumbs page.

Planning Your Days

  • Mid-November is a good time to go. The heat has usually eased and evenings by the river are much more comfortable, so plan walking for the morning and river views for after dark.
Averages for November are highs of about 24 to 26°C and lows of about 16 to 18°C, cooling through the month.
  • A good day: start with a slow dim sum breakfast, then walk Shamian Island and the old arcaded streets of Liwan while they're still quiet. Spend the middle of the day at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, where the carvings and courtyards explain a lot of Cantonese craft in one stop.

Neighbourhoods

  • Yuexiu: the historic heart, with most of the monuments and the cathedral. The arcade buildings near the cathedral are worth a look if you like architecture.
  • Liwan: a historic area with traditional architecture and the famous Chen Clan Ancestral Hall. Mentioned 2 Times
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (陈家祠) was built in 1894 and now holds the Guangdong Folk Arts Museum. Metro: Chen Clan Academy (Lines 1 and 8). Closed Tuesdays, open 9:00 to 17:30 in winter, tickets ¥10.
  • Tianhe: the modern district, and home to Zhujiang New Town (ZJNT).
  • Panyu: known for its old gardens and Shawan Ancient Town.
  • Haizhu: home to Canton Tower and Party Pier.
Canton Tower (广州塔) is 600 m tall including its mast. Metro: Canton Tower (Line 3 and the APM).

Dim Sum & Cantonese

  • Guangzhou Restaurant (Liwan): said to have the best dim sum in town.
广州酒家, founded in 1935. The flagship is at 2 Wenchang South Road (文昌南路2号). It reopened in Nov 2025 after a long renovation, with a Cantonese cuisine museum inside.
  • DianDuDe: a convenient dim sum chain.
点都德, with branches across Guangzhou. Its best-known dish is the red rice roll with shrimp (金莎红米肠).
  • Da Ge Fan (Beijing Road branch, Yuexiu): Cantonese food in a nice Cantonese setting, which is a good way to get a feel for Guangdong culture. Cheap, delicious and a favourite in the city. Try the pigeon. Shamian Island is easy to reach from here.
大鸽饭 (北京路店), at 越秀区西湖路68号, rooms 201 and 301. The chain is named after its signature dish: rice cooked in pigeon and pork bone broth until it forms a crispy crust, then topped with pigeon. Its flagship in Tianhe holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand.
  • Cantonese roast goose is worth trying. No particular restaurant was recommended.
烧鹅 (siu ngo in Cantonese), roasted and usually served with plum sauce.
  • Picking a place: the room itself is the best filter. A busy lunch crowd, a short menu focused on Cantonese dishes and small plates meant for sharing are better signs than a long queue for one photographed dish.
  • What to order: har gow, siu mai and cheung fun at breakfast, then roast meats or claypot rice later in the day. Leave room for a simple dessert of double-skin milk or herbal jelly.
To point at on a menu: har gow 虾饺 (shrimp dumplings), siu mai 烧卖 (open pork and shrimp dumplings), cheung fun 肠粉 (rice noodle rolls), claypot rice 煲仔饭 (the crispy crust at the bottom is the best part), double-skin milk 双皮奶 (a light milk pudding, often served warm) and herbal jelly 龟苓膏 (bitter, usually eaten with syrup or condensed milk).

Other Food

  • Tiger Prawn (Yuexiu, near Beijing Lu): great Vietnamese food. The menu is huge, and everything on it is done well.
  • 13 Factories (Tianhe, near the US Consulate in ZJNT): American soul and Cajun comfort food.
  • Mercato (Tianhe, on the roof of the K12 building): good Italian food with great rooftop views.

Canton Place Restaurants

  • Morgan's: a good pub.
  • Bandidos and Frida's: good Mexican food.
  • Hooley's: usually has live music.
  • Gail's: a good American diner.
  • Goat and Cages: decent sports bars.
  • Pipa Trattoria and Brasston: good pizza.

Bars & Nightlife

  • Party Pier (Haizhu, near Canton Tower): river-view restaurants and bars, though getting out of there at night can be a pain.
琶醍, on the site of the old Zhujiang Brewery. Nearest metro: Modiesha (Lines 8 and 18), about 700 m away, or the Haizhu tram from Canton Tower station to the 琶醍 stop.
  • Wuyangcun: lots of cute beer bars.
五羊邨, in Yuexiu. Metro: Wuyangcun (Lines 5 and 10).
  • Zhujiang New Town (ZJNT): several rooftop bars and restaurants across the river from Canton Tower.

Things to Do

  • Shamian Island: great for walking around the old colonial buildings. The places to eat there are touristy. Mentioned 3 Times
沙面, in Liwan. Metro: Huangsha (Lines 1 and 6), Exit F, then a 5 to 10 minute walk.
  • Pearl River cruise: go at dusk for a good overview of the skyline. One short cruise is enough. Spend the rest of the night walking the riverfront in Zhujiang New Town instead of chasing every brightly lit viewpoint. Mentioned 2 Times
Night cruises (珠江夜游) leave from Tianzi Pier (天字码头) and the Canton Tower pier, roughly 18:00 to 22:30. Sailing times are set on the day. Bring your original passport, as it's needed to board.
  • Nansha: has ports and a beach, but it hasn't been tried, so it may not be worth the trip.
南沙区, at the far south of the city. The beach is by Tianhou Palace: take Metro Line 4 to Nansha Passenger Port, then a shuttle bus or taxi.
  • Tiyu Xilu: lots of vintage shops, boutiques and good restaurants.
体育西路, in Tianhe. Metro: Tiyu Xilu (Lines 1 and 3), one of the busiest stations in China.

Ancient Towns

  • Shawan Ancient Town and Xiaozhou Ancient Town: old oyster shell houses (though many were knocked down recently), artisan shops and tea houses.
Shawan (沙湾古镇) is about 800 years old and is in Panyu. Xiaozhou (小洲村) is a village in Haizhu, closer in, and also an artists' village. The oyster shell houses (蚝壳屋) are Xiaozhou's best-known sight.
  • Go on a weekday to avoid the weekend crowds.

Parks & Outdoors

  • Baiyun Mountain: a recommended hike for outdoorsy people.
白云山. Metro: Yuntai Garden (Line 11) for the South Gate. A cable car also runs part of the way up.
  • Botanical Gardens and Panyu gardens: nice green spaces.
  • Zhujiang New Town Greenway: along the river from near the Asian Games park up through Huacheng Park, past the library, museum and opera house. Good for picnics, people-watching and architecture. Mentioned 2 Times
Huacheng Square (花城广场) is the centre of it, with the Opera House, Guangdong Museum and Guangzhou Library around it. The APM metro line runs underneath, and Opera House station opens onto the square.

Good to Know

  • Food tour: Lost Plate runs one in Guangzhou, recommended on the strength of their Beijing tours.
The Guangzhou Evening Food Tour runs Saturdays at 6:30pm, about 3.5 hours, US$69. Lost Plate also runs tours in Chongqing.
  • Mosquitoes are around all year.
