Although we had breathtaking views as the bus wound around 1000+ curves, we had some excitement. Apparently, it’s not abnormal for buses to be meeting other buses going the other direction and trying to avoid cars also going the other direction as they make these turns. This drive is not for the faint of heart. I was on the cliffside looking down much of the time, and even I gasped a few times when I looked down and saw how far it was down to the ocean. After Positano, we actually got stuck battling cars coming through a tunnel as we were trying to turn into that tunnel, being very narrow. We had to maneuver our way around these cars and then a bus came. I have some photos that I took that kind of show how close they are at one point we were a big bus and there was another big bus behind us, another one of our tour groups. At one point, a city bus, which is a full-size bus, came and was sort of halfway between the back end of our bus and the front end of the other bus, but the drivers didn’t even break a sweat. It was a little nerve-wracking, but I knew we’d get through it, but to be that driver, I don’t know how he did it. We came so close to grinding against other cars and busses. The city buses that go the opposite direction, you would think that they’d hit mirrors, but they knew exactly what they were doing.
My question is why aren’t these large buses banned from this road because it can’t be that safe, it can be dangerous, and it’s not that efficient to have to maneuver around all these curves. During that three bus situation, we actually held up traffic for about 15 minutes in both directions.
At one point, traffic was also stopped because a scooter driver with his girlfriend on his back ended up stopping in front of a public bus going the direction towards us because the girlfriend had to get off the scooter to go pick up the shoe that the scooter sriver had dropped. It’s a little crazy, but it was still a very beautiful drive.
